  • Producer + Mill:

Since year one of working in Ethiopia, Osito has endeavoured to cultivate sincere relationships with single producers when and where possible. For the past four seasons we have purchased coffee from Mensur Abahika, a stalwart and quality focused farmer located near Agaro town in Jimma. When we learned this year that his wife, Nesru Aba Nura, would have her own export license and plot of lands tarting this harvest season, we were over the moon. With the increased demand that the last year has brought Osito, we have been so pleased to funnel that demand into the Tokuma group, a collection of farmers to which both Nesru and her husband belong. By doing this we are pursuing our ideal of going deeper into current producing partners, rather than wider. Nesru' s 9 hectare farm is located in the Kota Kebele of Jimma.

  • Variety:

Heirloom locally selected sub varieties 74110 and 74112 were developed in the 1970’s at the Jimma Agricultural Research Center (JARC) for resistance to the coffee berry disease. These two varieties begin with “74” to indicate their cataloging and selection in 1974.

Variety 74110 was selected from an original “mother tree” in the Bishari village, Metu Province, Illuababora zone, Oromia region. After researching its resistance to coffee berry disease and overall yield, JARC released the variety in 1979. 74110 trees are short and compact, with small leaves, cherries, and beans.

Variety 74112 also originates in the Metu-Bishari forest and was similarly released in 1979 for its disease resistance and yield potential. Its trees, too, are small and compact. Both varieties grow well in climates similar to those where the original mother trees grew.

  • Process:

Coffees are picked by hand and then floated to remove lower quality cherries, then are dried on raised beds for an average of 21 days, with careful care taken to rotate the cherries. Then are processed and milled before being ready for export.
