Once wild forest, the land was discovered by co-founder Mulugeta Dukamo, with the first coffee trees planted in 2013 and the drying station built in 2017. Today Gatta is more than a farm — it houses a drying station, lodge, and training facility, with local residents (many of them women) leading harvesting, quality control, and processing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe decided to name our SHANTAWENE micro lot “ODAKO” to reflect the powerful culture of Shantawene, Sidama people. Odaco is a popular tree name in Shentawene, Bensa. The Odako tree is where the SHANTAWENE community meets under the tree to resolve the conflicts in the area . There is a similar tradition in other parts of Ethiopia as well for example (in the Oromo, known locally known as \"oda\". ) The coffee is sourced from 563 Daye Bensa member farmers from the SHANTAWENE area and our Gatta Daye Bensa Farm.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e******************************************************\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eVariety:\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHeirloom locally selected sub varieties 74110 and 74112 were developed in the 1970’s at the Jimma Agricultural Research Center (JARC) for resistance to the coffee berry disease. These two varieties begin with “74” to indicate their cataloging and selection in 1974.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVariety 74110 was selected from an original “mother tree” in the Bishari village, Metu Province, Illuababora zone, Oromia region. After researching its resistance to coffee berry disease and overall yield, JARC released the variety in 1979. 74110 trees are short and compact, with small leaves, cherries, and beans.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVariety 74112 also originates in the Metu-Bishari forest and was similarly released in 1979 for its disease resistance and yield potential. Its trees, too, are small and compact.
